At Comprehensive Rheumatology Center, IV nutrient therapy has become one of the most requested treatments in our office. Among the options we offer, the Myers’ cocktail is a longtime favorite, and many patients ask us what exactly is in it and why it might help them. Here is a closer look.
A Brief History
The Myers’ cocktail is named after Dr. John Myers, a Baltimore physician who developed the formula in the 1960s and 1970s to treat patients with fatigue, chronic pain, and a range of other conditions. After his death, Dr. Alan Gaby refined and popularized the formula, and it has remained a staple of integrative and functional medicine ever since.
What Is In It
The classic Myers’ cocktail is delivered through a slow intravenous drip and typically includes a blend of:
- Magnesium, which supports muscle relaxation and nerve function
- Calcium, important for bone health and muscle contraction
- B vitamins, including B complex and B12, which support energy metabolism and nervous system health
- Vitamin C, an antioxidant that also supports immune function
Because the nutrients go directly into the bloodstream, the body can absorb higher concentrations than it would from an oral supplement, where much of the dose is lost during digestion.
Customizing Your Infusion
Patients at our office also have the option to add glutathione or zinc to their Myers’ cocktail. Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that supports liver detoxification and cellular health, while zinc supports immune function and wound healing. Ask your provider if adding either of these to your infusion makes sense for your health goals.

Why Patients Choose It
Patients come to us for a Myers’ infusion for many reasons, including:
- Ongoing fatigue that has not improved with other approaches
- Muscle aches and tension
- Frequent migraines
- Seasonal illness and lowered immune resilience
- General wellness and recovery support, especially for patients managing chronic rheumatologic conditions
For our rheumatology patients in particular, many of whom live with chronic inflammation, fatigue, or fibromyalgia, the Myers’ cocktail is often used as a complement to their existing treatment plan rather than a replacement for it.
What To Expect
The infusion is given in our office under clinical supervision and usually takes between 30 and 45 minutes. Most patients tolerate it well. Some notice a warm sensation or mild flushing during the infusion, which typically passes quickly. Because everyone’s health history is different, our team reviews your medical background before your first infusion to make sure it is a good fit for you.
Is It Right for You?
IV nutrient therapy is not a substitute for a rheumatologic diagnosis or treatment plan, and it is not appropriate for everyone. If you are curious whether a Myers’ cocktail could support your care, talk with your provider at your next visit. We are happy to walk you through the options and help you decide what fits your health goals.
